‘If you make a mistake you have to make the best of it’
Alvaro Escobar is one of thousands of artists finding inspiration with the Sktchy iPhone app. Here’s a peek at his collection of Sktchy portraits with a few words from the artist.

What’s your background?
I come from a pretty big family, me being the youngest of eight kids. Many of my siblings were very artistic so I grew up surrounded by drawings and paintings. My brothers and I would hold drawing contests and see who could draw our favorite cartoon characters the best. Through these lighthearted competitions I realized how fun art could be and from there on out it became a big part of my life. I have had no formal art education but am considering pursuing an art degree.

What’s your medium of choice when you’re creating art?
Drawing pens. You can’t erase so there is extra pressure to make the right choices. If you make a mistake you have to make the best of it.

When you’re looking for inspiration in the Sktchy photo gallery, what jumps out at you?
Decent lighting, clarity (no graininess or filters) and sometimes a goofy facial expression works.

What’s one quirk in your creative process?
I like to have a tv show playing in the background while I draw. Right now it’s season 4 of Bob’s Burgers on Netflix. Tina’s voice inspires me.

Can you share one art-making tip?
Look at other artists’ works and see what inspires you. Don’t be afraid to explore and try different styles.
